Job Summary:
The Children's Librarian is responsible for providing exceptional library services and resources to children and their families. This role focuses on promoting literacy, fostering a love for reading, and supporting educational and recreational activities for children. The Children's Librarian will work closely with library patrons, parents, and educators, ensuring a positive and engaging library experience for all young visitors.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement innovative programming and services to engage children and promote literacy, including storytime sessions, book clubs, summer reading programs, and special events.
2. Assist children in selecting appropriate reading materials based on their age, reading level, and interests.
3. Provide reference services to children, parents, and educators, offering assistance in finding resources, locating information, and utilizing library technology.
4. Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for children, promoting diversity and cultural awareness through library collections, displays, and activities.
5. Collaborate with local schools and organizations to support their educational initiatives, including facilitating class visits, leading library tours, and participating in community outreach events.
6. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of children's literature, emerging technologies, and educational trends to enhance library programming and services.
7. Develop and manage collections of children's books, e-books, audiobooks, and other multimedia materials, ensuring a diverse and age-appropriate selection.
8. Assist with library circulation tasks, including checking materials in and out, placing holds, and managing overdue items.
9. Provide guidance and support to library assistants and volunteers working within the children's department.
10. Collaborate with other librarians and departments to plan and execute cross-functional library initiatives.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field.
2. Master's degree in Library and Information Science with a specialization in Children's Librarianship is preferred.
3. Proven experience working with children in a library or educational setting.
4. In-depth knowledge of children's literature, including popular authors, genres, and age-appropriate reading levels.
5. Familiarity with library classification systems, cataloging, and circulation procedures.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and connect with children, parents, and educators effectively.
7. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
8. Proficiency in utilizing library technology, including integrated library systems, online databases, and digital resources for children.
9. Understanding of child development principles and the ability to create engaging and age-appropriate library programming.
10. A passion for children's literature, literacy, and promoting lifelong learning among children.
